How to Get Your Resume Noticed

How to Get Your Resume Noticed How to Get Your Resume Noticed Sure the job market is tough right now, but, from my experience, people still arent putting the necessary effort into their resumes to ensure they are getting the attention the resumes deserve. So how do you make sure your resume grabs the attention of your reader? Follow along for a few resume tips and insights to reevaluate the document you have now and get better resultsAppearanceForget about a fancy letterhead and swirly font types. When employers comes across a fancy resume, they see that the candidate doesnt have enough confidence in his or her experience and abilities to just leave well enough alone. You dont need to dress up success success bleeds through the pages of your resume. With that being said, if for some reason you feel you must dress up your resume, I implore you, please dont include your picture. Your resume should describe who you are, your skills and accomplishments on paper. The interview is where po tential employers can put a face with a name. And for you movie buffs, do not spray your resumes with a sweet scent (thank you, Legally Blonde). It is not a love letter and its smell, if any, will not help. The only exception to this rule is if you are applying for a lage working in the creative department of a company or you want to be a model or actress and pictures of yourself are necessary. Otherwise, just say no.TextEliminate any large paragraphs of text on your resume. Too much text can result in your resume receiving a quick skim through, and then being tossed back into the pile. Hiring managers can receive hundreds of resumes a day they do not have the time or patience to read through masses of text. Just like in an elevator speech, you only have a short window of time to grab your readers attention. The text throughout your resume should be clear and concise. If you have large amounts of text, break them down into bullet points, which are much easier to swallow for people. Bu llet points force you to pull out only the main points of what you are trying to say, which will reduce the overall length of your resume.FontUse a standard font, such as Arial or Times New Roman. Avoid using fancy fonts because different recipients may open your resume on different operating systems. Using nonstandard fonts poses the risk of wingdings replacing fonts after the resume is opened.General RulesUse a chronological resume as opposed to a functional resume (Microsoft Word offers both templates).Be sure to read through the job description in its entirety before sending off your resume. HR managers will look for the listed skills and responsibilities throughout your resume before selecting it for further review. This is especially important if you know that your application is going to initially be screened by a software program. Most important, if you do not have the skill, do not put it on your resumeYou dont need anything fancy for your resume to get noticed, just the bas ics. As the saying goes, sometimes less is more.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Take our Recruiter Certification Program today. Were SHRM certified. Stop With Team Building Events, Try A Retreat Instead

Stop With Team Building Events, Try A Retreat InsteadStop With Team Building Events, Try A Retreat InsteadWhen was the last time you went on a team building event? Hopefully, it wasnt the time you had your lifes worst hangover, or when you accidentally kissed the colleague youd never spoken to. Of course, it could end up better than that, with new memories and deeper friendships with your co-workers. Even if you thought this was the best team building ever, I guarantee there is something even better a company retreatWe had a chat with Peter Fabor, founder of Surf Office, a company that helps other companies organizing their retreats. Events that are filled with fun activities and a very productive work. Surf Office has been bringing value to companies like Automatic, Stripe or Shopify for over 3 years now. Heres why you should organize a company retreat instead of a team building event too.Heres how s last company retreat went.1. Peter, whats your main mission at Surf Office?Make pe ople happy. Make employees of the companies that come for a retreat happier and mora productive. We believe that the one thing successful companies have in common is investing in their employees.2. Whats the difference between a retreat and a team building event?clickToTweet tweet=Teambuilding is a cost, company retreact is an investment. quote by faborio quote=Team building is a cost, retreat is an investment.A team building usually means that your team goes somewhere for a night or two, have dinner together, drink a lot of alcohol, and play some games. During a retreat, team building is involved, but its just a side activity. The main purpose of a retreat is to work and be more productive. But to work doesnt necessarily mean to sit in a closed room. Most of the time its something different. The most common schrift of activity companies do during a retreat is a strategy meeting. They brainstorm and analyze what to do in the next 6 to 12 months. Because you just never have the time i n the usual work environment. Aretreat is a time to stop and really think about the business. Then, a lot of companies do hackathons they brainstorm new features for their product or service. And after they return from a retreat, they work on those ideas. Besides that, you can gosurfing or hiking with your colleagues. A lot of teams also do just some regular things like cooking a meal together. But thats after the work and its not the main purpose of a retreat. Sometimes, we have companies that simply want to switch their regular work environment and work from the beach. 3. How long should a good retreat last? The longest retreat weve organized was 3 weeks. But usually, its around 3-5 days. It also depends on the location. If you travel for a long time to get to the place youd like to do a retreat at, its better to stay for longer. The length is another difference between the team building and a retreat. No company would invest in a 5-day team building event. Related articlesWhat jo b applicants need to know about culture fitThe key to Leanplums epic growth? Company cultureWhy we joined Bynders Global Work Remote Day4. How often should companies organize a retreat? It depends on 2 things the size of a company (its easier from the organizational point of view). For a large company, its enough to do it once a year. Secondly, it depends whether youre in an geschftszimmer or youre a distributed company. If youre a distributed company, then its good to do retreats more often. For example, one of our best clients is Automattic, they are 100% distributed and they communicate mainly on Slack. They have the need to meet in person more often and thats why they organize retreats every 3-4 months. They save money for the office rent, and they use the saved money to invest into retreats, e.g. their employees. WordPress has over 400 employees and they do a whole company retreat once a year. They have 2 full-time employees to organize that. Surf Office helps them organize the partial team retreats mentioned above (6-10 people).5. What does the package you offer to companies include? The core service includes organizing the accommodation, workspace, meeting rooms, projector, flipchart and anything your team might need to work efficiently. We also build a calendar for you and it comes from the basic schedule you send we use Trello for that and you can see it, add information, delete things or further develop it. So if you send us a basic schedule, then we recommend you some options (e.g. seafood restaurant on the arrival day, and we will suggest the best one and book it for you.) We want you to spend a minimal amount of time to organize everything. Sometimes, we organize meetups, as we have great connections with the local communities. We can also invite guest speakers on different topics during your retreat. Sometimes we create the content for companies, such as pictures and video for their social media channels. Then you can put it in about and hiring p age, to show that you do some cool stuff and you have a great company culture.Every retreat is very organized and transparent. Like that, everyone knows what the plan is, what youll be doing.6. What kind of activities can people do at a retreat organized by Surf Office? We want to offer experiences that are authentic and high quality. Also, its usually something that makes people get out of their comfort zone, which secures personal growth. We also want to make sure these activities are natural and people are excited to try them. Surfing, for example could be a scary one for some. Thats why before surf, we let the whole team watch youtube videos, they do thermisch up together and get motivated by each other. Its important to mention that our team tried all the activities we offer and we have close relationships with people managing those activities. Except for surfing, we also offer paddle boarding, e-bike tours, combined sightseeing around Lisbon (which include checking secret corner s ?? ). With e-bikes, theres always a healthy competition between the team members which is always fun. Then we also offer hiking and trips around the island of Gran Canaria. But of course, companies can organize activities themselves as well. In case they are interested in some particular sport or activity, were always happy to help them find the best providers around.7. Do some teams bring partners or families with them to retreats? Would you recommend that?It depends on the company. If your employees are older and have families, its good to bring family and kids. Also, to bring your partner. But then its harder to do all the team building activities. What happens if you bring your partner is, they go exploring the city while you work. And after you finish work, you have dinner together with everyone. Then, its a good idea to have a retreat for 3 days and then the partner comes for 2 more days which is not a part of a retreat anymore. But if youre a startup (usually with a quite y oung staff) its OK to go somewhere for 5 days. I mean, you dont have a family yet, etc. Dont get me wrong, though. We have a lot of people who are around 40-60 and they do the same experiences, they still come without partners or families. It really depends on the company and the team.8. Do you remember the very first retreat you organized? How was it different from the most recent one?(Laughing) The first one was a team of 4 people. They stayed for 2 weeks in Gran Canaria and I spent most of the time with them. I organized everything myself and did all the activities together with them. We became very close friends and we had a really great time together. Today, theres a lot of automation within the process. I try to meet some of the groups that come and have a chat with them. So the main difference is that I dont have to invest most of my time in being with our customers during retreats, but they still have a great time

How we fool ourselves (and what to do about it)

How we fool urselves (and what to do about it)How we fool ourselves (and what to do about it)My battery is low and its getting dark. Those were the final words of the Martian rover Opportunity as reported by numerous media outlets. The rover, lovingly nicknamed Oppy, fell silent in June 2018 after it was stuck in a massive dust storm.NASA officials beamed up hundreds of commands to the little rover, asking it to call home, but with no success. Oppy was officially pronounced dead in February 2019.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut what got most peoples attention wasnt the fact that Oppy operated on Mars for 14 years- well past its 90-day lifetime. Nor was it the record-breaking 28 miles it traversed on the red planet- far more than any other extraplanetary rover. No, what took the world by storm was the rovers final transmission to Earth, reported witha tweetfrom a journalist. My b attery is low and its getting dark. The tweet went viral, generating a media deluge across the globe. One guy even gota tattooof Oppys final words on his back. The message resonated with the public in part because we all feel, from time to time, like our batteries are low and its getting dark out there. To have the same sentiment expressed by a non-human gave us all the feels. For 14 years, this little rover dutifully obeyed her humans commands, while getting whipped around by fierce Martian winds and the type of intense dust storms that left Matt Damonstrandedon the planets surface. As the dust slowly swallowed Oppy, she beamed to Earth a final goodbye that summed up the courage of the little rover that could. My battery is low and its getting dark.Heres the problem The story is false.Right before it went silent, Oppy beamed a bunch of routine code to Earth that reported, among numerous other things, its power levels and the outside light reading. A journalist- who didnt let facts get in the way of a good story- took this random code, paraphrased it into English, and tweeted to the world that those were basically the rovers last words.Millions of people then hit the retweet button and a chorus of media outlets published stories about the rovers final transmission- all without pausing, contemplating, or bothering to ask, How does a remote-controlled space robot spit out fully formed English sentences designed to tug at peoples heartstrings?I spent four years serving on the operations team for Oppy, building stuff that went to Mars onboard the rover. Yet, for a brief moment, even I fell for the story. When I first read Oppys supposed final words, I let out an instinctive Awh and began to scroll through the press coverage digging for more. Then, out of nowhere, Richard Feynmans famous adage jolted me out of my trance The first principle is you must not fool yourself, and youre the easiest person to fool.Stories are powerful stuff. They create order out of chaos, clar ity out of complexity, and a cause-and-effect relationship out of coincidence. These mentally vivid images strike a deep, lasting chord with us.Stories can be used for good- to move people and to instigate change. But they can also be used for bad. Old George Orwell got it backward, Chuck Palahniuk, the author ofFight Club, writes.Big Brother isnt watching. Hes singing and dancing. Hes pulling rabbits out of a hat. Hes telling you powerful stories that overwhelm you until your imagination becomes as useful as your appendix. We fall for the story, throw logic and skepticism to the wind, and rush off to get matching Oppy tats.Fake news isnt a faulen phenomenon. Between a good story and a bunch of data, the story has always prevailed.A mountain of data dispelling the fraudulent study that links vaccines to autism isnt interesting. Jenny McCarthyexplaininghow her son developed autism after getting a vaccine (and then being miraculously cured through a dietary intervention) is endlessly fascinating. The remedy? Exercise your skepticism muscles so they dont wither. The next time youre tempted to instinctively hit that retweet button or accept conventional wisdom for what it is, pause for just a moment.Ask yourself,Is this right? Am I being captivated by the story? If I had to poke holes in this story, what might I say? Should You Refer a Friend for a Job

Should You Refer a Friend for a Job Given thatone in five roles are currently filled via employee referrals, you shouldnt be surprised if, at some point in your career, either your employer asks you to refer a friend friend to a vacancy or a friend asks you to refer them to a job atyour company. If you are an engineer, sales rep or developer areas where there are severe talent shortagesyoull most likely be involved in the employee referral process with some regularity. There are plenty of positive reasons to refer a friend to a job at your company. You can help your employer out in times of need, which benefitsthe business as a whole. You will also be helping a friend and simply doing a good deed. You may also generatea sense of goodwill from the referred friend, who may return the favor in the future, enhancing your career. In fact, research shows that people who invest in developing proteges perhaps by referring them to jobs have better rates of career progression than those who dont. Thegoodwill that you generate by referringa friend may actually be paid back in a way that accelerates your own career progression. Its kind of a you-scratch-their-back-and-theyll-scratch-yours situation. If all of thatisnt enough incentive for you, thenconsider thatmany employers also offer rewards for referring friends to the company. Check to see if your employer has a reward systembefore referring a friend to make sure you refer in the right way and receivecredit for doing so. Ifyour employer does not have a reward system for employee referrals, there is absolutely nothing wrong with approaching your employer and asking them to set one up.While its clear that there are plenty of benefits to referring a friend to your company, you should not overlook the potential pitfalls of such activities, and you might want to temper your referral behavior accordingly. There are several questions you should consider before deciding to refer a friend1. Can You Really Vouch for the PersonsPerformance at Work?Sure, the rolle may be a good friend, but can you be sure that the person you are referring is actually competent? Have you worked with them and/or witnessed their work firsthand? If not, do you know someone who haswitnessed their skills firsthand? If you are in a position to reliably vouch for someonesperformance, then referring them is a safe bet. Otherwise, there may be some risk attached to referring them. This doesnt necessarily mean that you shouldnt refer them, but you might want to cover yourself by attaching caveats to the referral. Let your employer know you are not in a position to vouch for the quality of the candidate. From there, the employer can decide whether or not to accept the referral.2. Will the Referral Reflect Badly on You?What if you are faced with the situation of referring a potential candidate whom you have reason to believe is a substandard or extremely aver age performer? Referring this kind of candidate will reflect badly on you and could damage your reputation as a talent scout, judge of character, and potential future influencer within the company. It could also damage the performance of the company.Think carefully before referring this type of candidate, even if they are a good friend you are trying to help out. If the candidate isa good friend whomyou feel morally inclined to help, you may need to gatherevidence that they can truly perform well at your company. That being said, dont make a habit of referring candidates that could reflect badly on you, as doing sowill eventually have negative consequences for you.3. Is Your Firm Toxic? Is your firma good distributions-mix to work, or is it toxic? Are you yourself disengaged and ready to leave? Is the whole team, office, or company disengaged? Is your company struggling to find staff due to apoor company culture and substandard employment practices?Your friend is most likely an adult who can make decisions for themselves. If youre considering referring them to a company that you do believe is toxic, you want to come clean with them and give them an honest perspectiveon what its like to work for your employer. Let your frienddecide for themselves if they want to jump in the fire.Of course if the situation is truly that toxic, you might want to save your friendfrom a disastrous decision by simply not referring them at all.4. Would You Hire the Person If This Were Your Company? This is the single most important question to ask yourself when you are thinking aboutreferring a friend. If you wouldnt hire them yourself, then you probably shouldnt refer them to your employer no matter how much you like that friend.

They must also have an Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test score of 91 (with a 15 in Skilled Technical). Individuals who have prior work experience as veterinary technicians or who have completed coursework in areas such as animal science, zoology, or biology will be especially well suited to this position. A good working knowledge of animal behavior and care will also be valuable to candidates seeking a position in this field. Salary The Army compensation package includes a combination of basic salary, housing, medical insurance, food allowances, paid vacation, special tax breaks, and more. Basic pay scales are available on U.S. military recruitment websites and through recruiter offices. The salary paid to animal care specialists is considered to be comparable to that which is paid to those working in related civilian roles such as veterinary technicians, lab technicians, or nonfarm animal care workers. The median wage for veterinary technicians, a similar career path, welches approximately $29,710 per year according to the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) salary survey. Earnings reported in the BLS salary survey ranged from less than $20,500 per year ($9.85 per hour) for the bottom ten percent of technicians to more than $44,030 per year ($21.17 per hour) for the top ten percent of technicians. The median wage for lab animal technicians, another similar career path, was approximately $22,040 per year according to the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics salary survey. Earnings for this position ranged from less than $16,490 per year for the bottom ten percent of technicians to more than $33,780 per year for the top ten percent of technicians. Career Outlook In a 2012 publication, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that veterinary technician positions would grow at a very strong rate of 52 percent over the decade from 2010 to 2020. Nonfarm animal caretaker positions are also expected to show a strong rate of growth at approximately 24 percent over the same period, much faster than the average for all careers. The animal health industry is expected to continue to show rapid growth for the foreseeable future, and prospects should be good for those with the skills and training to pursue this type of work. While there is strong interest in this sort of position with the military, prospects should be good for those who already have a background in animal health care before entering the service.

Survey says womens earnings peak 11 years earlier than men at $35K

Survey says womens earnings peak 11 years earlier than men at $35KSurvey says womens earnings peak 11 years earlier than men at $35KCollege-educated womens earnings peak a median 11 years earlier than mens earnings and they earn $35,000 less, according to datafrom a new report by salary site PayScale.Pay for women peaks at age 44, with earnings of an average of $66,700 a year, according to Payscale, while mens earnings peak at age 55 at an average of $101,200.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraPayScale obtained this data by examining a sample of more than 1.4 million workers who took their salary survey between April 2016 and April 2019. The sample included workers age 22 to 60 with a Bachelors degree and looked across 22 industries. The gender gap begins almost as soon as men and women begin their careers at age 22, the median wage for women was $40,400, in comparison to $52,500 fo r men.The disparity is even more revealing once you select by race as well as gender. Black womens income peaked at $61,000 at the average aver of 52 the lowest of all demographics measured.Black men also have low peaks the lowest among the males studied. Their average earnings peaked at $80,000 at age 59, the lowest among the males studied.Of course, between the ages of 29-38, many educated women begin to have children, resulting in the motherhood penalty on salary and availability of hours and even her job. Many reduce the number of hours they work. According to the report, This becomes more clear when we look at which occupations have the largest gaps in wage growth. Greedy jobs, i.e. those that pay a premium for working long hours, have the largest divergence in the growth satz of wages for men and women. Some of those occupations often high-paying are industries like law. In the legal field, women reach their peak earnings at age 35, with a median salary of $75,000. While it can be surmised that many took a financial hit to have a child men went on to reach their peak earnings of $168,800 at age 56.Other industries with large gender pay gaps are healthcare, sales, life sciences, and management. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Templates to Help You Avoid Writing Awkward Emails

Templates to Help You Avoid Writing Awkward Emails Templates to Help You Avoid Writing Awkward Emails Let̢۪s face it. Emailing people kinda sucks if you do not know the person. It̢۪s worse when you are trying to network. So many blogs and advice articles state reasons why emails are a waste of time and explain how to manage them. Reaching out to complete strangers, or anyone you know, may feel awkward, but it does not have to be. Try using these templates to help you avoid writing awkward emails. 1. Reaching out to a complete stranger Maybe you read something they wrote online or they work somewhere you find interesting. You know in your heart you are not spamming anyone, but it still feels awkward to reach to this person that you had never spoken to before. Try this Hello [Name], I hope you̢۪re having a great week! My name is [Your name], and I work as [Position] at [Company]. I became familiar with your work when [how you discovered this person] and wanted to reach out to tell you how much I admire your [skill or specific experience]. If you̢۪re open to it, I̢۪d love to [grab coffee/connect on LinkedIn/other opportunity to get to know each other] to [keep in touch/learn more about your experience]. Really looking forward to keeping in touch, [Name]! Best, [Your name] 2. Following up after a brief encounter You went to a networking event or met someone on a trip and somehow ended up talking business or a hobby. You would like to catch up with the person and see how things have been going. You fear they will have a short attention span and they won̢۪t remember you. That̢۪s just awkward. Try this Hello [Name], I hope you̢۪re having a great [day of the week]. It was so nice to meet you at [place where you met] and chat about [topic you talked about]. After our conversation, I found this article about [relevant topic]. I thought you̢۪d find it interesting and enlightening, so I figured I̢۪d pass it along. Again, I really enjoyed meeting you and I̢۪m looking forward to keeping in touch. Don̢۪t hesitate to reach out if you want to get together and bounce around some more ideas about [topic]. I̢۪d love that! Wishing you the best, [Your name] 3. Requesting an interview Oh boy. You know this can get awkward really fast. You want to connect with the person and you want to interview. You no longer want to be a stranger. Perhaps, you can work with this person. This type of email takes some thought because you asking for something from someone. And you cannot be rude about it. Try this Hello [Name], I hope you̢۪re doing well! My name is [Your name], and I̢۪m a [job title] with [Company]. I really admire your [work/experience] with [outlet]. I̢۪m interested in finding out more about [area] myself and was hoping you̢۪d be willing to provide some insights from your experience. If you̢۪re open to it, I̢۪d love to buy you a cup of coffee sometime soon so I can ask you some questions and learn more about you and your [journey/career path]. I understand your schedule may be busy, so I̢۪m also happy to pass along some questions via email if that̢۪s easier for you. Looking forward to hearing from you, [Name]! Best wishes, [Your name] 4. Introducing a friend to a friend Your friend said it was a good idea to reach out to one of his or her friends. Your friend says you have lots in common and should talk to each other. But this involves writing to an almost-complete stranger. You both do not know each other, but you have a mutual connection. You can avoid any awkwardness on your part. Try this Hello [Name], My name is [Your name], and I [how you know mutual contact] [mutual contact̢۪s name], who passed along your contact information to me. [Mutual contact̢۪s name] mentioned that we share a [passion for/interest in/experience with] [shared interest] and said you̢۪d be a great person to get to know! So, I thought I̢۪d reach out, introduce myself, and let you know that I̢۪d love to find out more about you and your experience with [specific area]. Looking forward to connecting, [Name]! All the best, [Your Name] Closing There is no getting around the perceptions and awkward nature of email. We all have reasons for deleting emails that appear awkward, sometimes even when we know the person. Next time around, try one of the templates above and see how it works out for you. Special thanks to The Muse for the templates!

Six Things to Look for When Hiring for Retail

Six Things to Look for When Hiring for Retail Six Things to Look for When Hiring for Retail Upset customers, lost orders, messy merchandise, dirty floors, not enough staff - these are some of the consequences of bad hiring decisions in retail. The ultimate effect is lost sales. When your store’s performance is based on the sale of goods, it pays to hire staff who get it right most, if not all, of the time. Here are six things to look for: 1. Understanding products Every retail store has a different set of products, and new products are constantly being introduced. Retail staff must be able to learn about these products, how they might be used or worn, how they work together, how much they cost and where they are in the store. If a candidate for a retail job already has retail experience, ask how they learned about the products in their last job. If they’re new to retail, ask how they plan to learn about the products in your store. 2. Attention to detail When handling credit cards and money, details are paramount. Pricing, sizing, measurements, country of origin and materials used are some of the other details that retail associates need to know. If special orders are placed on a regular basis, they need to be able to get those details right.  Ask about a past experience where details mattered and how the situation was handled. 3. Understanding of people Products don’t automatically sell themselves. People sell products to people. Even online retailers such as Amazon.com are successful because it values customer reviews. A retail associate who observes customers’ behavior in the store, listens to what they say, makes small talk, asks relevant questions and offers suggestions has the ability to sell more products than someone who just stands behind a cash register. Ask candidates to tell you about a situation in which careful listening got them great results. 4. Proactively do mundane tasks Retail work isn’t all about the immediate interaction between customers and products. Folding, organizing, cleaning display cabinets and sweeping floors are some of the mundane tasks that need to be done every day in a retail environment. A good retail associate will use his or her downtime to keep the environment neat and clean. Ask candidates what they would do when the store is quiet after a two-hour rush of customers. 5. Punctuality Showing up on time should be simple, but it doesn’t come naturally to some people. The simple question, “Are you punctual?” will reveal candidates ability to get to the store on time. Also probe for what they would do in the case of a traffic jam or weather delay. 6. Flexibility Working on nights and weekends, particularly during the holidays, is a given for many retail and seasonal jobs. Because a certain number of people are needed to staff a store, schedules can change quickly if someone calls in sick or needs time off. Make sure the candidate can work the hours they are being asked to cover, and probe for issues that might limit availability, such as another job or school. Uber 3 management lessons we can learn from the scandal

Uber 3 management lessons we can learn from the scandal Uber 3 management lessons we can learn from the scandal On Tuesday, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick announced an indefinite leave of absence on the same day his  company released the recommendations of an internal investigation into its workplace culture, especially around its treatment of women. The company started the investigation after a former engineer at Uber, Susan Fowler, alleged sexual harassment, discrimination - and a human resources department that ignored these claims.Kalanick, 40, has won a reputation for brash  leadership and overgrown-bad-boy behavior- including nicknaming the company “Boober” for how it boosted his dating life. The company has been looking at how Kalanick’s behavior has the tendency to trickle down to other executives, and as a result he had been working with an executive coach and taking up meditation before he went on leave this week.Kalanick’s stamp on Uber is unavoidable, demonstrating the power of an executive’s approach to form the culture of a company. Uber is almost a $70 billion company, and it got there through Kalanick’s management style of not letting anything- class-action lawsuits over labor practices for drivers, “God view” surveillance of its users’ private data, repeated sexual harassment allegations by  its executives, and government regulations- stand in the way of the company’s growth. Now, the company is paying for it.  Here are three lessons we can learn how we can use Uber as a case study on avoidable mismanagement.1. Create values you can be proud of and live up to themUber had a set of values. Unfortunately, they were pretty aggressive and incentivized employees to treat each other badly in the pursuit of their own personal success. These abrasive mottos inspired employees to act with impunity.Among those values, which sound ripe for conflict: “Let Builders Build,” “Always Be Hustlin’,” “Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping,” and “Principled Confrontation.”One of the recommendations from the Eric Holder-led investigation was to “eli minate those values which have been identified as redundant or as having been used to justify poor behavior.”It’s not  surprising that under the workplace culture  of “Meritocracy and Toe-Stepping,” a top Uber executive would feel compelled to obtain and keep the medical records of an Uber driver’s rape victim he believed may be  lying. That executive was among the dozens of people the company fired  after the law firm’s investigation uncovered multiple instances of sexual harassment, retaliation and unprofessional behavior. What’s significant about that: the high number of people being reported and fired shows that this toxic work culture was encouraged  and enabled by Uber’s aggressive culture. And for the decent people that remain at Uber, working in this environment still affects their present mood and future employment opportunities. New York Times‘ reporter Mike Isaac said hiring managers were wary of hiring people who worked at Uber after the scandals. It’s a reminder that  even when you’re not directly contributing to its toxicity, a bad  workplace culture still directly impacts you. also am being told dozens of people are quitting each week inside of Uber. attrition is getting to them. - rat king (@MikeIsaac) June 13, 20172. Listen to your employees’ concerns early and oftenThis headache of an internal investigation could have been avoided if management had listened to Fowler’s concerns sooner. She went through the proper channels to be heard and said she was dismissed and ignored. When she reported an employee who was pressuring her to have sex with him, she was told by HR that they wouldn’t do anything because he was a “high performer.”To fix this  behavior, Uber would need to change how it treats criticisms and complaints. It would need to create an empowering environment where employees like Fowler could  step forward without fear. Now Uber has to create that culture anyway - but in a seriously weakened position they could have avoided if they had just listened in the first place. Uber’s solution: The internal investigation recommended implementing “a robust and effective complaint process” that would include “multiple avenues for lodging a c omplaint, including an employee’s immediate manager or next-level manager, the organization’s Human Resources Business Partner, or the Integrity Helpline.”3. Have zero tolerance for misbehavior, especially  at the topCreating zero-tolerance policies for harassment and discrimination  is a basic human resources practice that should be easy enough to follow, and  it was what the investigation recommended. But as one Uber board member showed, behaviors don’t change overnight. In the immediate aftermath of the recommendations being released, board member Arianna Huffington discussed what Uber policies could be changed in front of employees. When she said that adding more female board members leads to more women joining boards, her fellow board member David Bonderman responded with a sexist remark: “Actually, what it shows is that it’s much more likely to be more talking.”Bonderman resigned from the board hours after audio of the exchange had been leaked. The quick response t o his remarks shows that post-investigation, senior leadership is going to be held more accountable in public. That’s a good thing for Uber, although Kalanick still remains CEO. Although Kalanick himself was not recommended to resign, the investigation concluded that  Uber should reduce his responsibilities.Overall, the recommendations are a cautionary tale of what happens when you let founders and “high performers” get away with bad behavior for far too long. With the release of its recommendation, Uber is signaling that it’s willing to change. Time will tell if these written promises will lead to action. For now, cleaning up your act  means cleaning house.

The quickest way to rebound from failure according to science

The quickest way to rebound from failure according to science The quickest way to rebound from failure according to science You don’t need a scientific study to tell you that messing up at work is a zero-fun hell spiral. But science can help us understand how to respond to our mistakes so we can learn from what happened and kick ass the next time around. And, it turns out, popular advice like “sucking it up” may not be the best route to go.A recent study published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making found that people who allowed themselves a brief wallowing period - even to the point of self-pity - after failing at a task were more successful in the future compared to those who tried to rationalize and move on immediately from what happened. In the first experiment, people were asked to search online for the cheapest blender they could find, with the possibility of winning a $50 cash prize. Unbeknownst to those involved, the experiment was designed for everyone to fail. After establishing baseline failure, researchers asked participants to write down how they felt about losing. Some were in structed to focus on their emotions - and experienced thoughts like, “Ugh, I can’t believe I did that,” “I don’t want to feel like this ever again,” and “I didn’t do my best.” Others were asked to think “cognitively” (logically) about their failure, for example, “This wasn’t important” and “I wouldn’t have won anyway.”Process your emotionsFor the second experiment, participants were given a budget and asked to search online for a book to buy a friend while scientists measured how many minutes they spent looking.“We found that the people who’d focused on their emotional responses spent nearly 25 percent more time searching for a low-priced book than those who only reflected cognitively on their failure,” says co-author Selin A. Malkoc, associate professor of marketing at Ohio State University. Why would acknowledging feelings about failure and even throwing a pity party motivate someone to try harder in the future? It’s true that we should ra tionalize mistakes to a degree - otherwise we’d go crazy beating ourselves up - but when we stop to process our emotions, our innate ability to be resourceful and change kicks in.“Neuroscience studies show that when we feel strongly enough about something, the brain ‘tags’ it and when a similar situation arises in the future, we draw from that emotion to find solutions,” says Malkoc. “For example, if a person was bit by a dog in the past, fear and pain would surface every time they saw a similar dog. And, more importantly, the person might alter her behavior based on the emotional thoughts stored in their brain.”Learn from your mistakesPerhaps blenders and online shopping don’t seem precisely relevant to office life, but Malkoc and her team view their findings as closely related to the workplace, a space where performance is constantly being assessed by supervisors. “It’s especially applicable to employees who want to learn from their mistakes,” says Malkoc. “In that case, it’s best to pause and let your mistake sink in.”So next text time you screw up at work, give yourself permission to acknowledge how bad it feels, sit quietly with those emotions for a bit - but not too long: Malkoc advises ruminating for five minutes, max. “That’s long enough before the defense mechanisms kick in.”This post originally appeared on Shondaland.com.

Outsourcing Core (and Non-Core) Work

Outsourcing Core (and Non-Core) Work Outsourcing Core (and Non-Core) Work Whatever the size of a business, or the field that its in, a critical rule of outsourcing is that a firm should not outsource one of its core functions. While this rule is almost universally agreed upon by outsourcing experts (no matter where they hail from), the definition of core as it relates to work, varies considerably among outsourcing experts. Core and Non-Core Business Functions In the broadest sense of the term, core functions are the most essential functions in your firm and those that are the most critical to your firms revenue stream. In some cases, core functions may be defined by law, but in most cases, it is up to the individual firm to define what functions are core to their business operation. Likewise, non-core functions are those that are of the lowest value to the business and are the most generic. While there are different definitions in different industries, the translation of this simple statement into a business plan is a very complex process. Few firms (even those that seem  similar) will agree on what differentiates core from  non-core functions. An Example of Core Versus Non-Core Functions To better understand the practical differences between core and non-core, consider how this rule is applied in legal process outsourcing (LPO). LPO is unique because it is a licensed and regulated profession. The functions that are considered to be the practice of law are illegal for anyone other than a lawyer to perform. These are the functions that are generally considered to be the core functions of a law firm. However, a law firm may choose to outsource very specialized areas of their  legal practice,  even though they may constitute major sources of income  and require specialist lawyers. Generally, though, the outsourcing discussion is about the functions that fall outside of the specific legal definition of the practice of law. The practice of law is a phrase that often describes a clearly defined set of functions that occur during the representation of a client (for a fee) in the courts. However, the majority of work within a law firm (or legal department of a company) is not actually time spent in court. Answering phones, distributing emails, and completing general office paperwork (the same type of administrative work undertaken in any kind of industry or office) is considered non-core work. Even creating a very basic contract  which entails filling out a legal template does not usually require a lawyer (except when it comes to  reviewing the final product). However, every firm has a slightly different notion of under what circumstances a contract can be written from a template by a non-lawyer and when it needs to be hand-crafted by a lawyer. The difference (as stipulated by each individual law firm or legal department) impacts how much work that firm considers to be core and how much is non-core. Up to the Company In the end, pre-thought must be placed on clearly defining exactly what functions of your business are core and which are non-core before making a decision as to which tasks and functions will be outsourced. As the legal example shows, theres no universal right or wrong, just an internal understanding among departments and executives about your firms operations.

BofA Adds Indian Billionaire to Board

BofA Adds Indian Billionaire to Board BofA Adds Indian Billionaire to Board In an apparent move to ingratiate itself with deal markets in India, Bank of America has named India's wealthiest person (and the world's ninth richest) to its board of directors. The appointment of Mukesh Ambani, the first non U.S. citizen named to the bank's board (and no doubt the one with the fattest pockets; his net worth is $27 billion), is expected to help BofA navigate the budding economy in India. It will give the bank a political ally, a business ally, and a direct line to landing those multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects that India has vowed to undertake.Last year, BofA ranked eighth in both Indian MA and Indian equity underwriting volume. It is BofA CEO Brian Moynihan's hope that the firm soon reaches the top five, at least, in those (and other) important investment banking categories. The move of naming a non-national to a board is becoming a more common one (both HSBC and Goldman Sachs have named foreigners to their boards in recent years) due to the fact that co untries in the so-called BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are now hosting the fiercest battles for deals. All of the BRIC countries currently possess, and have been forecasted to maintain for some time, booming deal markets, whereas markets in the U.S. and Europe are, at the moment, luke warm at best. As a result, Wall Street's top banks have been mobilizing capital overseas and making personnel moves in hopes of boosting their international bottom lines. And given that landing deals in the BRICs relies so heavily on knowing whose hand to shake, banks not only need dealmakers who know how to close transactions, but also those with the ear of lawmakers who have the ability to source them.(Bloomberg)(Related: Bank of America Getting Bigger and Better in Asia)

Amazon will no longer ask job applicants for their salary history

Amazon will no longer ask job applicants for their salary history Amazon will no longer ask job applicants for their salary history If you are one of the many prospective job seekers eagerly hoping for your city to be chosen as the location for Amazon‘s HQ2, there’s one more potential advantage that the e-commerce giant will offer its chosen employees - no more salary history questions about how much you earn or have earned.Amazon, which employs half a million people worldwide and promises to add more than 100,000 jobs in the U.S., announced that it is banning any salary history inquiries for prospective U.S. employees, according to an internal message posted Tuesday that was  obtained by BuzzFeed News and  confirmed by a company spokesperson.Amazon forbids salary history questionsIn its announcement, Amazon said that it wanted to take “a proactive stance” following new legislation at the local and state level to ban salary-history questions. The announcement to Amazon hiring managers says that they can no longer “directly or indirectly ask candidates about their current or prior base pay, bonus, equit y compensation, variable pay, or benefits.” The statement goes on to explain that, “You will not be able to rely on current compensation to justify exceptional on-hire offers. You can continue to rely on factors such as salary expectations, competing offers, and other job and market-related factors.”Under this new policy, Amazon hiring managers can still ask about a candidate’s salary expectations, but they cannot use a person’s current or previous salary information as a determining factor in employment or compensation offers. The message states that it is treating the new salary ban as purposefully “broad” and will extend the ban to the sourcing stage of the recruiting process. The policy explicitly bans using Amazon’s recruiting systems or third-party databases such as LinkedIn Recruiter to search or estimate a candidate’s salary. The reasoning behind the banAmazon joins Facebook  and Google as one of the few major technology companies to ban the salary history qu estion in all of its nationwide offices. Amazon’s decision follows several local and states implementing salary history bans, including California, Massachusetts, Philadelphia, and New York City.Research has shown that salary history questions disproportionately affect women, who are likely to enter the job market being underpaid and have that disadvantage follow them throughout their careers.  Millennial women at the beginning of their careers earn  about 90 cents on average  for every millennial man’s dollar. When a hiring manager knows how little you earned at your last job, they can know that you have weaker leverage to negotiate for more money, regardless of your qualifications. To break the cycle of unequal pay, advocates of salary-history bans seem them as critical to making sure every employee gets fairly compensated. “Being underpaid once should not condemn one to a lifetime of inequity,” New York City public advocate, Letitia James, said when the city passed its law .

Air Force Security Forces Responsibilities (3P0X1)

Air Force Security Forces Responsibilities (3P0X1) Air Force Security Forces Responsibilities (3P0X1) Members of the Air Force Security Forces, which is Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) 3P0X1 are tasked with providing  force protection duties, guarding weapons, air bases and Air Force personnel from possible dangers. The Security Forces main goal is to keep the people, planes, base, weapons (even nuclear), and the surrounding area safe from any threat, including the intrusion by unauthorized people. The largest career field in the Air Force, the Security Forces stay busy with their primary duties and still are the bases first response to  disasters - either natural or man-made. Security force members are essentially the military police within the Air Force and the branchs first line of defense. They keep the peace at all Air Force bases and installations around the world. This career fields duties include such things as securing the perimeter of a base, to handling security dogs as the bases law enforcement force. This is a career field that could lead to the civilian job of police officer, or other security personnel.   Duties of Air Force Security Forces The use of deadly force to protect Air Force personnel and resources are among the serious responsibilities of security forces. They may be called upon to protect nuclear or conventional weapons, or protect Air Force One from hostile forces. Their duties also call for performing life-saving procedures, like CPR, when acting as first-responders to an accident or disaster situation. Security forces personnel are also involved with the planning to implement security policies and procedures. They may be called upon to provide oversight and guidance or assistance to commanders and supervise and train other security forces personnel. This might include inspecting and evaluating the other personnel and analyzing any resulting reports or statistics.   Military Working Dog Teams Another key responsibility of Air Force security forces is the training and use of military working dog teams as part of their daily operations. Theyre responsible for ensuring the health and welfare of the dogs, and training the dogs in such things as intruder control and hold training, as well as keeping training records.   Qualifications for Air Force Security Forces Security force personnel need normal color vision, and cant have any history of personality disorder. They must never have  been convicted by a general, special, or summary courts-martial, or non-judicial punishment for drug offenses, or other criminal conduct.   In order to enter the security forces, recruits need to be able to qualify for secret security clearance and to bear arms under Air Force regulations. They should be able to speak distinctly and achieve a general score of 33 or better on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam.   Completion of high school with courses in government, behavioral science, computer, and communicative skills is useful for recruits considering the security forces as their Air Force job.   Training for Air Force Security Forces All applicants will undergo training at the Air Force security forces academy at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. During the 65-day course, students will learn basic military police functions, including missile security, convoy actions, capture and recovery of nuclear weapons, law enforcement and directing traffic. The course also teaches nonlethal tactics, such as using pepper spray and pressure points on a body. Theyll also learn anti-terrorism and law enforcement techniques, and how to be effective in air base defense, armament and equipment, information security and other related skills.   Advanced Security Forces Training Advanced training within the security forces can lead to becoming an Air Force counter-sniper. For example, the 506th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadrons Close Precision Engagement Team (CEPT), or Tiger Team, are highly trained shooter/spotter pairs who perform sniper missions, counter-sniper, perimeter security, and reconnaissance missions to defend U.S. Air Bases at home and around the world. CEPTs, operating from concealed positions have dealt with insurgents digging holes for IEDs or setting up mortars close the base from which U.S. service members operate and where high-value equipment is located.  Skilled marksmen receive training in advanced marksmanship (sniper) and are able to hit stationary and moving targets several hundred yards away.  Together with the spotter, the Tiger Teams extend the security perimeter well outside the range of the physical barriers of the base they protect.
